Billie Poteet

January 21, 1930 — August 5, 2017

On August 5, 2017, Billie Grace Burum Poteet passed from this life. She was teacher and a student for all her 87 years. A celebration of her life will be at 10:00 am at the First United Methodist Church, Panhandle, Texas.
She loved life, her family, her students, and animals. A very positive person she worked to accomplish many goals. Billie went to Panhandle Schools from first grade through high school graduation in 1947, she attended Boulder, Colorado for 2 years, then completed her Bachelor's at West Texas State. Billie earned her Master's degree in Education from West Texas, and her Doctor's degree in Education from the University of Arkansas, in 1968-1969.
Billie lived most of her life in Panhandle. She was gone for short periods to Boulder, Colorado, Pecos, Texas, Memphis, Texas, and Collbran, Colorado, but Panhandle always was home, and she returned eagerly.
Her interests included horses, being outside, travelling, sewing, knitting, learning and reading. A collection of over 100 stirrups that she had gathered for many years marked her interest in horses, history, people. The subjects she taught was a varied as her interests.
She was loved by many, and will be greatly missed.
Billie is survived by her three children, Larry and Sandy of the home, and Susan in Amarillo. She has two grandchildren, Jim Smith and wife Shanna, of Crowell, Texas, and Chelsea Wiley, and husband James, of Fort Worth. There are two great-grandchildren, Remington and KatiAnn Smith of Amarillo, Texas.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Groves and "Jerry" Burum, a daughter and son-in-law, Cindy and Mike Smith, and brother Earl Burum.
The family asks in lieu of flowers donations be made to the Carson County Square House Museum, box 276, Panhandle, Texas.
