Bobbye Schmitz

Bobbye Nell Adams Schmitz, loving wife, mother, grandmother, and sister, 79, of Amarillo, went to be with our Lord on August 20, 2009.

A celebration of Bobbyes life will be on Saturday, August 22, 2009 at 2:00 p.m. in First United Methodist Church in Borger. Private graveside services will be in Highland Park Cemetery by Minton Chatwell Funeral Directors of Borger.

Bobbye was born November 10, 1929, in Leslie, Texas, to Roy Lee and Willie Bailey Adams. While attending school in Lakeview, Bobbye played competitive tennis, volleyball, and basketball. Upon graduation from Lakeview High School in 1947, she attended Texas Technological College, graduated in 1950 with a Bachelor of Science in Education. She moved to Borger, where she taught physical education and coached tennis. Bobbye met and married the love of her life, Adolph Schmitz, Jr., on June 8, 1952. They made their home in Borger, with son, Dirk and daughter, Shelley. Bobbye was a charter member of Faith Covenant Church.

After taking time off to raise her children, Bobbye returned to Borger High School, and for 27 years, touched the lives of many young people, as she taught more than just physical education and tennis. She taught her students to always apply themselves and to be the very best that they could be. She believed in her students, cared deeply for them, and was a strong advocate and mentor for them. Being one of very few women coaches in the area, Bobbye was a role model with drive, determination, and the ability to hold her own, all the while maintaining her quiet sense of style. She retired from BISD in 1990 so that she could spend more time with the business that she and Adolph owned, Accent Travel. Her love of travel and adventure lead her to many parts of the world, and she continued to travel until the last few years of her life. Accompanied by all of the special people in her life that preceded her, Bobbye has just departed on the most fabulous journey of her life.

Bobbye enjoyed playing bridge, tennis, and golf, as a member of the Borger Country Club Ladies Golf Association. She volunteered as a Gray Lady at North Plains Hospital for many years, and later at Golden Plains Hospital. Bobbye enjoyed supporting her community, providing scholarships to Frank Phillips College and serving as a loyal and active member of Adelante, Altrusa and Rotary Clubs of Borger. She was also a long standing member of The American Society of Travel Agents.

Bobbye is preceded in death by her husband, Adolph Leo Schmitz, Jr., parents R.L. and Willie Bailey Adams, and brother R. L. Adams, Jr. She is survived by her son, J. Dirk Schmitz and wife Sherry of Borger, daughter Dr. Shelley Schmitz Sweatt and husband Greg, of Wichita Falls; sisters Jolene Means and Frances Williams of Houston, brother Bailey F. Adams and wife Ruth Ann of Houston; grandchildren Carson Reid Schmitz of Aspen, Colorado, Meredith Anne Schmitz of Dallas, Merrill Lynne Sweatt of Wichita Falls; sisters in law Ann Holt and husband Dennis, of Dallas, and Sue Schmitz Lattig and husband Ed of Albuquerque, New Mexico; nieces JoBeth Williams, Janelle Oujesky, Marcia Braizatis, Holly Holt Soetanga, Heidi Holt Hill; nephews Terry Adams, Stan Adams, Derik Lattig, and Britt Holt; many, many loving cousins; and her very special friends and caregivers at Ware Living Center in Amarillo.
