Charles Gill

Charles Gill, our beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend went to be with the Lord on December 17, 2020.  Charles was born in Miami, Texas, on December 22, 1931, to Alton and Glynis Gill.  He attended Miami schools before attending North Texas College and earning a degree in education.  He married Bette Joyce Jones on June 1, 1957, in Dallas, Texas.  Ironically, there were three other couples in Panhandle who had the same anniversary, Curtis and Ann Metcalf, Janie and Ronald Kotara, and Gene and Irene Phillips.  These couples spent many anniversaries together.  Charles was preceded in death by Bette, March 15, 2004.

Charles was very open about his Christian faith and was involved in The Gideon’s International Ministry, the prison ministry, and served as a deacon at First Baptist Church of Panhandle where he was a member for 55 years.  Charles was active with the Texas Baptist Men’s organization remodeling and building churches all over Texas.  In his early 80’s he participated in a mission trip to Haiti. Charles was the Panhandle Jr. High Principal for 39 years, touching the lives of many families in the Panhandle community.  Charles enjoyed going to the New Mexico mountains to snow ski and trout fish.

After Bette passed away, Charles met a special friend, Nell Patchin of Amarillo.  They were traveling companions on church trips all over the world, making special friends everywhere they visited.

Charles is survived by two sons, Kent of Atlanta, GA, and Keith (Dolly) of Leesburg, GA, two grandchildren Kyle and Kendall, one brother Duane Gill of Denver, CO, and four sisters, Jo Goen of Floydada, Kay Mayo of San Marcus, Lynn Flowers of Amarillo, and Jacque Gill of New York City, NY.

The family requests memorials to the First Baptist Church of Panhandle or Texas Baptists Men’s building organization in lieu of flowers.

A Celebration of Charles’ Life will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday January 9, 2021 at the First Baptist Church in Panhandle. Services are under the direction of Minton Chatwell Funeral Directors of Panhandle.  The services will be streamed through First Baptist Church of Panhandle Facebook page.
