Clinton Williams

Clinton Elmer Williams, 80, of Panhandle, TX passed away on Sunday, September 09, 2007 in Amarillo . Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church , Panhandle, TX with the Rev. Joe Zimmerman, pastor and Rev. Bill Austin officiating. Burial will be in the Panhandle Cemetery , arrangements by Minton-Chatwell Funeral Directors of Panhandle. Mr. Williams was born May 24, 1927 in Ford County , KS . He spent his early years in Kansas and Colorado before moving to Sanford , TX . He attended Sanford schools before graduating from Phillips High School where he and his four brothers were members of the legendary Phillips Blackhawk football team. He continued his football career at West Texas State College where he was a member of the 1950 Border Conference Championship team and of the 1951 Sun Bowl Winners. He also boxed in Golden Gloves and nationally in AAU. He was a member of the T Club Athletic Fraternity. He met and married Billie Ray Evans, his college sweetheart, in 1951. He spent six years coaching in McClean, Stinnett and Panhandle before entering full-time farming in Carson County . He was a member of First Baptist Church and served as Deacon, and Sunday School teacher. Mr. Williams served his community on the Panhandle ISD Board and McClellan Creek Soil Conservation District representative. He was preceded in death by his parents, Earl and Cecil B. Williams, an infant sister, Audry, and two brothers, Bobby Williams and Donald Williams. Survivors include his wife, Billie Ray, of the home; two sons, C. E. Williams and wife Kay and Ricky Williams, all of Panhandle; three daughters, Carol Lair and husband Tom of Canyon, Cheryl Sowder and husband Jerry of Sudan, TX and Karen Miller and husband Billy of Perryton; two brothers, Jimmy Williams of Amarillo and P. D. Williams of Lawton, OK; 17 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be to First Baptist Church , Panhandle, Gideons International or to a favorite charity.
