Cornelio Hernandez Carrasco

Cornelio Hernandez Carrasco, born July 20, 1940 to Cornelio and Isabel Hernandez, He was the 11th of 12 children and grew up near San Antonio de Manuel Benavidez.  Beloved Husband, Father, “Welito”, Brother, Uncle and Friend to many.

Preceeded in death by his bride Irene, Brothers Librado, Francisco, Lino, Israel and Sisters Ernestina , Celestina and Severa.  He is Survived by his sisters Angelita, Rita, Paula and Benigna;  Son’s Oscar Hernandez and wife Laura, Jaime Hernandez and wife Michelle, Octavio Hernandez & Karla Rocco; Daughters Zoraida Hernandez, Manuela Felan & Greg Felan and Mary Felan and Husband Joseph Felan; 18 grandchildren and 29 great grandchildren.

He came to work in the Fort Davis area as a young vaquero working cattle.  His work ethic was of high reguard and he worked his way up to ranch foreman for Rancher King Terry in the Sterling City Area.  This job paved the way for Cornelio to bring his family over from Mexico, to give them a better life. They lived in the sterling city area for 3 yrs before making their way to Borger Texas in 1978.  Cornelio then became an Insulator, working all over the U.S. while raising his family. Though there were 8 people living in their modest 2 bedroom home, it was common for him to bring coworkers home with him on the weekends to give them a home away from home.

Having grown up on a goat ranch, La Vinata, Cornelio had a unique way with all animals, from goats to horses to wild quail.  His whistle and gentle ways would see them following him around the pasture.  He had a green thumb, grew gardens, fruit trees and was even known to climb pecan trees to harvest and trim them up until the age of 79!  Though only an elementary education, he was highly intelligent with an engineer mind and could build anything with bailing wire. A humble, generous and kind man, he had sparkling green eyes and a jovial disposition and is fondly remembered to always be whistling.  When remembering his childhood, he would say, “We weren’t rich with money.  We were rich with crops, trees, land, livestock but most importantly, familia con amor, Gracias a Dios”

He worked his whole life for his family who were his everything.  He adored his grand-kids but his great grandkids stole his heart.  Even when dementia clouded his mind, the great grands could always make him smile.  Though he will be missed terribly, we rejoice knowing he is reunited with the love of his life, His Bride of 50 years, Irene.  His legacy lives on through all his descendents, family and friends who are honored to have been a part of him and to have known him. Funeral mass will be 1:00 pm Tuesday, November 8, 2022 at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church. Cremation will be under the direction of Minton Chatwell Funeral Directors of Borger.
