Dolores Griffin

July 2, 1930 — December 3, 2015

On December 3, 2015, Dolores Dell Davis Griffin went to be with our Lord. Dell was born on July 2, 1930 in Muskogee, OK to Hudson and Ruby Wilson Davis and moved to Borger from Clovis, NM in 1941. She graduated from Borger High School in 1948, Stephens College, Columbia, MO in 1949 and attended Oklahoma University in Norman, OK where she met her husband to be of 65 years, Dr. William B. Griffin of Elk City, OK. "Dr. Bill" and Dell were married on November 24, 1950, moved to Borger in 1959 with their three sons. Soon after, their fourth and only Texan son Jeff came along and they have been an active part of the community ever since.

Honey, Mom, Granny, Supergranny, Dell and Aunt Dolly were just some of the ways we knew her. She was a strong woman and true to her family and friends. Everything about Dell was alive, powerful and loving. She was the family go-to person for advice and help or just for some tough love, a warm smile, and the best home cooked meal you've ever had. She seemed to be able to do anything and everything…and she did. She was a leader, a go-getter, and a doer. No task was too daunting for Dell. She was tough, and this strong exterior was what made her soft spot for her husband, boys, grandchildren, nieces and cousins all the more beautiful. She was the best mother anyone could have. Once you were part of the family, you were truly surrounded by her blanket of love (which would be as soft or scratchy as you needed it to be!). Her daughters-in-law became her own daughters. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren became her children. She was a second mom to her nieces. She was the most loving and dedicated wife imaginable to her dear husband "Dr. Bill," and through life's storms, she was always there. Dell and Dr. Bill are a true example of how a strong marriage can carry on its legacy for years to come. The amount of time and energy that she gave to her family was exceptional, but she still managed to give just as much to the First United Methodist Church, the Hutchinson County Historical Museum, Adelante Club, her bridge club and to her friends. Dell became a member of the Adelante Federated Women's Club in 1957. This gave her an affiliation with the Texas Federation and the General Federation of Women's Clubs. She served three terms as president of Adelante and held various other positions. She was elected president of the Top of Texas District of the Texas Federation of Women's Clubs and served in other chairmanships within the District. Dell loved the history of the county and was a founding board member of the Hutchinson County Historical Museum. She spent countless hours volunteering and orchestrating events for the Museum and for many years wrote a weekly column, "Museum Musings" for the Borger News-Herald that reported on the activities of the museum and shared some of the history of the area. Dell and Bill were active members of the First United Methodist Church and were members of the Kum Dubl Sunday School class. She served as president as well in other capacities of the United Methodist Women, faithfully supporting the work of missionaries across the globe. Along with many other Church activities, at Christmas time, Dell directed the erecting and decorating of the beautiful tree in the Church sanctuary. She was particularly proud of the Chrismon's that had been fashioned by church members years ago and continue to adorn the tree. Dell was well known across the community as an outstanding cook and hostess. She was also an avid reader and an excellent bridge partner. She was an exceptional writer, planner, initiator, and an amazing artist. She changed everyone's world she touched for the better. It's hard to imagine our days without her. She will be missed every moment by so many in so many ways. Her drive and strength, love and loyalty, will live on in all those she knew and loved. Above all, each of us will be forever better for having been a part of her life.

Dell was preceded in death by her parents, Hudson and Ruby Davis, and her sister Catherine Davis Lawhon and husband John F. Lawhon.

She is survived by her husband of 65 years, Dr. William B. Griffin, four sons, William D. Griffin and wife Teresa, Borger, TX; Phillip C. Griffin and wife Teresa, Prosper, TX; Jonathan M. Griffin and wife Kelly, Grapevine, TX, and Jeffrey B. Griffin, Borger, TX; eight grandchildren, Melissa Griffin Picou and husband Conrad Picou, Houma, LA, William H. Griffin and wife Tambra, Weatherford, TX, Stephanie Griffin Young, The Colony, TX, Christopher L. Griffin and wife Dawn, Robinson, TX, Davis A. Griffin, Denver, CO, Madison E. Griffin, Denver, CO, Elizabeth Griffin Andrews and husband Richard Andrews, Midland, TX, and Amanda Griffin Braucht and husband Nicholas Braucht, Dallas, TX; nine great grandchildren, Frank, Piers and Paxton Picou, Abigail and Weldon Griffin, Jackson Young, Rhett and Clare Griffin, and Joe Andrews, V; two nieces CC Lawhon and Amanda Dell Wandres and husband Victor Wandres and their children Calliope and Hudson Wandres; many other cousins and countless friends.
