Eunice S. Bentley, 98, died Sunday, May 9, 2010 in Houston.
Services will be at 9:00 a.m. Friday at the First Baptist Church in Stinnett with Rev. Andrew McQueen officiating. Interment will be in Stinnett Cemetery under the direction of MintonChatwell Funeral Directors of Borger.
Mrs. Bentley was born on November 8, 1911 in Gray County, Texas to Albert B. and Mattie Webster Smith. She attended school at Grandview School in Gray County and High School in Carson County. She walked one and onehalf miles to school or rode horses to school, sharing with neighbors. Her family furnished the buggy and feed and their neighbors furnished the horse.
She married Maurice Benjamin Bentley on January 10, 1930 and she has lived in Hutchinson County for seventytwo years. Mrs. Bentley was employed at the Hutchinson County Courthouse for over thirty years in various offices. She was county superintendent of schools for three years, worked and served as secretary for Soil and Water Conservation Service Board of Directors for 30 years, worked for the North Plains Water Conservation District 2 for 19 years, and worked for the Hutchinson County Extension Service from 1953 to 1973. She also worked with the 4H Club and the County Tax office from 1978 to 1984. She taught Sunday School with her favorite class being the ladies of her age. She was grand marshall of the Stinnett 73rd birthday parade. She worked diligently for the First Baptist Church on the Church grounds committee and the committee selecting plans for building the church parsonage. She served two years as director for Stinnett Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, served in all offices of the Stinnett OES, including Worthy Matron. She served as president of the TriCity Past Matrons Club.
Mrs. Bentley was preceded in death by her daughter Maurine Jones, her husband of 48 years, Maurice B. Bentley, three sisters Lucille Smith, Ethel Smith and Edith S. Womble, and three brothers, Orville Smith, Robert Newell Smith and Charlie W. Smith.
She is survived by two grandsons Kenneth Jones of Jackson, WY, and Jamie Maurice and his wife Sherrie of Aurora, CO. and numerous nieces and nephew.
