Flora Katharine Wallace Ezzell: A Life Well Lived.
Flora Ezzell passed from this life on Saturday, June 5, 2021, at the age of 96. Flora was born to Delia and JB Wallace in Plainview, Texas on November 29, 1924. She was preceded in death by her parents; loving husband, Robert C. Ezzell; sister, Mary Rogers; brother, Jim Wallace; grandchildren, Emily and Caleb Ezzell. sisters-in-law Charlotte Warner, Shirley Gunter, Evelyn Beasley, and brother-in-law Don Ezzell.
After graduating from Texas Tech University in 1945 with degrees in Chemistry and English, Flora was employed by Phillips Petroleum Company in Borger, Texas as a Chemist. Soon, she met Bob Ezzell, the love of her life, and they were married on February 9, 1948. Flora taught elementary school in Borger for a short time, until her family began arriving. They had nine children between1949 to 1965, and the family resided in Borger. Over the years, Flora enjoyed working as a substitute teacher, Girl Scout leader and a social worker with troubled youth. She gave of herself generously in everything she did. In 1980, Phillips transferred Bob and Flora with youngest daughter, Sarah, to northern England. After an adventurous 5 ½ years, Flora and Bob came back to Borger to enjoy retirement.
Flora and Bob were dedicated travelers, visitors to Hawaii over many years. While living in England, they were able to enjoy trips to Europe as well as various other traveling adventures during retirement. She lost Bob, her friend and great love, in 1998 after over 50 years of marriage. Flora continued to have wonderful trips with relatives and children, her last being to Hawaii when she was 89. She continued to travel, by bus to Alaska on her own and going on cruises.
Flora was one of the founding members of the Josiah Bartlett Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR), holding various offices and serving as Chaplain for the past 10 years. She was a member of the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women (DCCW) where she held local and national offices, attending national conferences and being recognized as Catholic Woman of the Year. She also taught AARP’s 55 Alive defensive driving course for 15 years, never hesitating to correct her children as they drove her around in later years!
Flora was a devoted member of St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, attending morning Mass and after that, going to breakfast with her friends. Later when challenging health made morning Mass difficult, Flora attended Saturday Mass and tried out Borger’s various restaurants for dinner with her group of friends.
Flora dearly loved her children and their families. Grandchildren were always amazed that she knew and remembered so many details about their lives - no small feat considering she had 34 grandchildren and 31 great grandchildren. We were all continually amazed at her razor sharp memory for details of her life that spanned almost a century.
Flora is survived by her children and grandchildren, including daughter, Debi Buckley and husband, Gene; grandchildren Scott Holland, Jana Buckley and Jill Stover; son, Mike Ezzell and wife, Mary Alice; grandchildren Amy Davis and William Thomas; daughter, Cindy Ezzell Floranina; daughter, Martha Rose; grandchildren, Bonnie Stewart, Jamie Shipley, and Michael Rose; daughter, Nancy Ezzell; grandchildren, Kelly, Randell, Lindsey Smith, and Crystal Smith-Shanklin; son, Patrick Ezzell and wife, Lisa; grandchildren, Ellie, Robert, Adelaide, Aaron, Andrew and James Ezzell, Justin and Sydney Dubuisson, and Roland Dunkerly; daughter, Barbara Crane and husband, Jim; grandchildren, Aaron and Joshua Buchanan, Farrin Gustafson, KJ Moore, and James Crane; son, Steve Ezzell and wife, Pam; grandchildren, Tyler and Isaac Ezzell, Shelby De Luna, Diana Sparks and Austin Ensey; and daughter, Sarah Eury and husband, Gary; grandchildren, Caitlyn and Nathan Eury.
