Borger

Chris Watson was born December l9, l9l6, in Boonville, Kentucky, to George Smith Watson, a Presbyterian minister, and Claudia Dodson, a graduate of Cincinnati Conservatory of Music.

Chris attended Wooster College where he played quarterback on the football team and was named to the Ohio All Star team. He graduated with a BS in Geology and Natural Sciences in l937. Chris continued his education at the University of Pittsburg where he obtained a degree in Petroleum Engineering and then began work with Phillips Petroleum.

Early in l94l, Chris enrolled in government aviation ground school classes in Odessa, TX. Florene Miller, whom Chris married 3 years later, was the instructor of these ground school classes and Chriss flight instructor as he earned his pilots license.

Chris was transferred to Bartlesville, Oklahoma in l942 and a few months later volunteered to help drill oil wells in England which was desperate for oil to support her war effort. Chris transferred to Borger in 1965 where he retired from Phillips Petroleum after 44 years as Engineering Director of North America Exploration and Production.

Chris loved to travel and had many hobbies including photography and stamp and coin collecting. After retirement, he built and enjoyed a large workshop filled with tools and power equipment. For many years he had a leadership role in the local United Way. For 40 years, he was an active member of the Borger Noon Lions Club. He was a member of Faith Covenant Church.

Chris is survived by his wife of 68 years, Florene Miller Watson, two daughters, Gail Smith and husband, Gerald of Silverton, TX and Jean Roark and husband, Lee of Woodway, TX four grandchildren: Greg Sutphen of Houston, TX, Shelly Sutphen Garcia of Katy, TX, Chris Whittington of Englewood, CO and Clay Whittington of Denver, CO and two great grandchildren: Axton Whittington and Blake Garcia.

Graveside services will be 10 am Tuesday at Westlawn Memorial Park in Borger under the direction of MintonChatwell Funeral Directors. A viewing and visit with the family is scheduled from 6 to 7 Monday evening at Minton Chatwell Funeral Directors.
