Gary Douglas Adkins, 64, of Fritch, passed away peacefully surrounded by family on Friday, February 7, 2014, following a valiant battle against illness.
Graveside service will be held for Gary on Tuesday, February 11, 2014 in Westlawn Memorial Park at 2 pm, officiated by Jake Minton with arrangements by MintonChatwell Funeral Directors of Fritch. Honorary pallbearers will be Kyle Kindy, Scott Kindy, Seth Adkins, Michael Webb, Gary Winters and Bill Maddox. Visitation for Garys many friends with his family will be at the funeral home at Broadway and and Canadian in Fritch, from 68 pm Monday, February 10, 2014.
The family requests that memorials be made to the Joel Douglas Adkins Memorial Scholarship fund or the Doug and Wanda Adkins Memorial Scholarship fund at Frank Phillips College, College Advancement, P.O. Box 5118, Borger, Texas 790085118.
Gary was born November 6, 1949, in Borger, to Doug and Wanda Adkins. He accepted Christ at an early age while attending the First Baptist Church in Phillips. Gary graduated from Phillips High School and was a gifted multisport varsity athlete on outstanding Blackhawk football and basketball teams, including the 67 state football semifinalists. Gary graduated from West Texas State University with a degree in finance and worked in the finance and automobile business for many years, earning a reputation for being professional and fair to all of his customers. Prior to retirement,
Gary worked many years at the Clements Unit in Amarillo. He showed respect to the inmates, receiving it from them in return.
Following retirement, Gary dedicated himself to lovingly caring for his parents in the twilights of their lives. Gary was forthright, honest, and loyal, and had a soft spot in his heart for children and his beloved dogs. Gary was preceded in death by his parents and his nephew, Joel.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara of the home a daughter, Stacey Adkins, of Lubbock a son, Jason Adkins, of Borger five grandchildren, Lilie, Seth, Aubrey, Madison, and Brianna Adkins of Borger a sister, Marion Kindy and husband Danny of Borger a brother, Robin Adkins and wife Valerie of Amarillo and many beloved nephews, nieces, uncles, aunts, and cousins.
The family wants to express their heartfelt thanks to the staff of Hospice of the Southwest for the loving care and comfort they provided to Gary.
