George Metcalf

February 18, 1934 — July 25, 2010

George Curtis Metcalf, 76, passed away July 25, 2010 after a hard, wellfought
battle with cancer.

Services will be held Wednesday, July 28th at 10:30 am at the First Christian
Church of Panhandle with Dr. Jerry Lane officiating assisted by Pastor Larry
Perkins. Burial will be in Panhandle Cemetery by Minton Chatwell Funeral
Directors of Panhandle.

On February 18, 1934, Curtis was born in the home of his maternal grandparents
who lived on a farm north of Panhandle in Carson County. Curtis was the first
born son of Carl and Johnnie Metcalf and grew up on the family farm east of
Panhandle. He graduated from Panhandle High School in 1952.

After serving in the Texas National Guard from 19521956, he was called to
active duty by the US Army in August 1956. He was stationed in Fort Chaffee
Arkansas and was deployed to Germany. He was discharged in July 1958 and
returned to Panhandle to work for Lane Company.

On June 1, 1961 he married Ann Fortner in Tyler, TX. That same year he started
farming full time with his dad and eventually bought the family farm along with
another farm. He continued farming until he retired in 2008.

He was a former deacon and past board president of the First Christian Church
and a charter member of the Panhandle Country Club. He served as president of
the Panhandle Little League for several years and coached many baseball teams.
He also coached Kids Inc. basketball teams. He was an avid collector of John
Deere memorabilia as well as many other antiques. Attending farm sales,
auctions, and sporting events involving his children and grandchildren were his
favorite pastimes. His family was very important to him. He was a devoted
husband, brother, dad, and pawpaw.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Carl and Johnnie Metcalf and a brother,
John Edward Metcalf.

Survivors include his wife Ann of the home a son, Eddie and wife Stacy of
Stratford three daughters, Angela Clay of Panhandle, Janie Haiduk and husband
Brad of White Deer, and Debbie Jones and husband Jeramy of Panhandle two
sisters, Mary Rice of Canyon and Carol Mayfield and husband Eddie of Panhandle
and his ten grandchildren, Kelsey, Tanner, Sarah, Cassidy, Emily, Claire,
Carlee, Whitney, Wesley, and Curstin.

The family suggests memorials be made to the First Christian Church of
Panhandle, Texas Oncology, BSA Hospice, Accolade Home Healthcare, or a favorite
charity.
