Helen Irene Chapman Sweet, 87 of Borger passed into glory of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on May 25, 2014 at her home in Borger, TX. Helen, the eldest of five children, was born to the marriage of Jessie Ray and Eutha Irene White Chapman on October 16, 1926 in Hulbert, OK, at their home.
She graduated Sunray High School in 1944 and attended Northeastern University, in Tahlequah, OK, working on a degree in Education while teaching K8th grades at Norwood Community Elementary School.
At the end of WWII Helen became reacquainted with and married her childhood classmate, Harold Zane Sweet, a young WWII Navy Operations Mechanic. The couple lived in Caldwell, Idaho for a brief time and then moved to Borger, TX, in 1946where they resided since that time. Their marriage of 67 years and ten months was blessed with two daughters and three sons. Helen was a longtime active member of First Baptist Church of Borger and she worked as an Avon Representative in the Borger community for over 40 years.
Helen is preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, and a son Stephen Harold Sweet. She is survived by daughter Virginia Sweet Winegar of Borger, daughter Marjorie Sweet Sommers of Lubbock, TX, son Jeff Sweet and wife , Jolynne Sweet of Borger, and son Rodney Sweet and his wife, Carla Sweet of Borger.
Among her survivors are eleven grandchildren, including Lessa Perry, Odessa, TX: Denise Mongold and her husband Terry Mongold of Borger, Michael Winegar and wife Kathryn Winegar, Amarillo,TX Amy Sommers, Dallas,TX Jon Sommers and wife Greta Sommers, Temple, TX Alissa Hedges and her husband , Andy Hedges, Lubbock, TX Jenni Paynter and her husband, Trevor Paynter, Chino Hills, CA Julie Huff and her husband , Jordan Huff, Midland, TX Jessie Sweet and his wife, Jenny Sweet, Amarillo, TX Logan Sweet, Amarillo, TX Nathan Sweet, Borger,TX. Eighteen great grandchildren , including Hunter Perry, Allie Perry, Taelor Mongold, Ashley Mongold, Alex Winegar, Evie Winegar, Luis Winegar, Addie Sommers, Maggie Rose Hedges, Jubal Hedges, Anslee Paynter, Berklee Paynter, Carrlee Paynter, Dynlee Paynter, Blair Huff, Gabriel Sweet, and one great grandchild yet to be born. Helen loved and was loved by two step grandchildren , Trinette Jones and her husband , Clinton Jones and Kassi Nail and her husband Calvin Nail. Four step great grandchildren Keirrah Jones, Alexus Jones, Callie Nail, Breely Nail and Tinsley Nail.
Also surviving her two sisters Marie Ashbrook and her husband Bill , Vera Buttress and husband Vernon. Two sister in laws Shan Donahue and Ethel Chapman. Plus numerous nieces and nephews, cousins and friends. Helen will lovingly be remembered and admired for her beauty of mind, soul and stature. Her family treasures the memories of seeing Helen reading her Bible and knowing she daily prayed for each one. A wonderful person, Helen, was the model of kindness and sweet spiritedness. She will be missed by her adoring family and friends.
Memorial services will be 11:30 Tuesday, May 27th at the First Baptist Chapel with Charlie Morgan, pastor officiating. Burial was at Westlawn Memorial Park under the direction of Minton Chatwell Funeral Directors of Borger. Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church 100 S. Hedgecoke Borger, TX 79007.
