Howard Lane

Wilbur "Howard" Lane, 102, of Panhandle went home to be with the Lord on Saturday, December 31, 2016 in Pampa.

Graveside services will be 10:00 a.m. Wednesday, January 4, 2017 at the Panhandle Cemetery, a Memorial service will follow at 11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church with his son Rev. Dr. Jerry Lane of Pampa officiating, and Rev. Randy Thomas of the First United Methodist Church assisting. Services are under the direction of Minton Chatwell Funeral Directors of Panhandle.

Wilbur "Howard" Lane was born November 9, 1914 to Roy Wilbur and Ada (Kincade) Lane in Arnett, Oklahoma. He married Christina Hendrix on October 25, 1936 in Pampa. After they married they moved to Booker, and then in 1937 moved to Panhandle. He ran Whitehouse Lumber from 1938 to 1943, and then partnered with Glenn Bobbett in 1943 to purchase Midwest Implement. In 1944 he bought Glenn out and the business became Lane and Company. In 1963 the business became Lane and Company Inc.

Howard loved selling and being involved with the John Deer Company. He farmed most of his life and held multiple positions in Panhandle. He was a member of the Panhandle First United Methodist Church where he served on every committee. Howard was Scout Master for Troop one, Panhandle City Council member eight years, Mayor of the City of Panhandle eight years, Panhandle School Board member, President of the Highway 60 Association, member of the original Water Planning Commission out of Lubbock, member of the Tri-State Hardware Association and then President, Lions Club member for 70 years, President of the Garretson Senior Citizens Center, board member of the First National Bank of Panhandle, and was Citizen of the year.

Howard is preceded in death by his parents; wife Christina, August 2, 2013; son Roy Lane, December 2, 2006; one sister, and three brothers.

Survivors include his son Rev. Dr. Jerry Lane and wife Mary Lou of Pampa, his brother Don Lane and wife Susanne of Pampa, daughter in law Georgia and Vernon Cook of Miami, four grandchildren Karrie Smith and husband Shawn of Panhandle, Jeffrey Lane and wife Amy of College Station, Kelly Lane of Panhandle, Tamara Krauser and husband Jeremy of Lubbock, seven great grandchildren, and two great-great grandchildren.

There will be a visitation at the funeral home on Tuesday evening from 5 to 7 PM.
