Hugh Berger

Hugh Emil Berger, 88, of Borger, died Sunday, July 17, 2016 in Amarillo.

A Celebration of Life will be 11:00 a.m. Thursday, July 21, 2016 at the Minton Memorial Chapel with Pastor Conny Moore of the Bunavista Baptist Church officiating. Arrangements are under the direction of Minton Chatwell Funeral Directors of Borger.

Hugh Emil Berger was born August 4, 1927 in Denver, Colorado to Oscar and Bertha (Hunter) Berger. He served his country proudly in the United States Army from 1945 to 1947 at the end of WWII and was assigned to the U.S.S. Hope. Hugh was a very strong swimmer in high school and college where he broke many records. He was also Captain of the 1951 swim team at the University of Colorado. Hugh received his Bachelor's degree in Education in 1951, and his Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering in 1959. He married LaVon Salyards on August 23, 1959 in Denver, and then they relocated to Borger. He worked for Phillips Petroleum from 1959 to 1985.

In 1961 they started bowling. He has actually bowled two perfect games during his lifetime. Hugh loved working with children, and led the Young American Bowling Alliance (YABA). Volunteering for the American Red Cross, Hugh was a water safety instructor trainer. He was also an inventor and held several United State patents. Hugh and LaVon traveled to all 50 states, and over 40 different countries.

Survivors include his wife LaVon of the home; a son Alan Berger and wife Julie of Lubbock; a daughter Dian Babasikas and husband Alexander of Ioannina Greece; a sister Laura May Bacon and husband Herbert of Grand Junction, Colorado; four grandchildren, Brett Berger, Viktoriya Berger, Peyton Berger, all of Lubbock, and Elleni Babasikas of Greece.
