Borger

Jerrell Leon Phares, 85, of Borger passed away Monday May 22, 2017 in Amarillo.

Funeral services will be 2:00 p.m. Friday May 26, 2017 at the Keeler Baptist Church with Dr. Paul Anderson of Wofforth, Texas officiating. Burial will follow in the Evergreen Garden at Westlawn Memorial Park. Services are under the direction of Minton Chatwell Funeral Directors of Borger.

Visitation will be Thursday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home.

Jerrell was born February 26, 1932 in Oak Grove Parish, Louisiana to Realus and Inez Smith Phares. He served his country honorably in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict in which he was a recipient of the Purple Heart. Jerrell married Ethel Wilkerson May 28, 1952 in New Mexico. They settled in Borger after his time with the Army in 1954, and he retired as E and P Maintenance Supervisor from Phillips Petroleum. Jerrell played golf all of the time, and was a member of the Keeler Baptist Church, Borger Elks Lodge No. 1581, American Legion Post No. 671, and a volunteer at the High Plains Helping Hand.

Jerrell is preceded in death by his parents, and a brother Billy Phares.

Survivors include his wife Ethel; a son Jerry Leon Phares II of Keller, California; two daughters Gail McGarry and husband Butch of Yale, Oklahoma, Teresa Owen and husband Tom of Ruidoso, New Mexico; a brother Gary Phares and wife Sherry of Borger; a sister Glenda Henson and husband Bob of Asley, South Carolina; a sister in law Juanita Phares of Borger; six grandchildren Justin McGarry of Yale, Oklahoma, Chad McGarry and wife Amber of Amarillo, Clint and Melissa Phares of Arlington, Zack and Laura Owen of Henderson, Nevada; three great grandchildren Julia McGarry of Yale, Oklahoma, Gentry and Ainsley McGarry of Amarillo.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to Keeler Baptist Church 627 Gardner St. Borger, Texas 79007, or High Plains Helping Hand 614 Weatherly St. Borger, Texas 79007.
