Jimmy Don Mitchell, 81, left it all on the field May 26th, 2017 below the Friday night lights of his loving Canyon home, Sky West, with Julie and Jimmy Joe, and their spouses by his side.
A Celebration of his Life will be held 10:00 a.m. Tuesday, May 30th, 2017 at the First United Methodist Church with Rev. Dr. Jerry Lane of the Community Crossroad Church in White Deer officiating. Burial will follow in the Panhandle Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Minton Chatwell Funeral Directors of Panhandle.
Jimmy Don will be remembered as friend, educator, coach, salesman, businessman, steak master, gardener, and above all, a loving Father and Grandfather.
Jimmy Don was a lifelong Panhandle Panther, and a member of the First United Methodist Church of Panhandle. He loved smash mouth football and treasured his time measuring young men for their helmets and pads. Track was his passion and he was known by many as Mr. Starter.
August 24th, 1956 he married his high school sweetheart, Carol Ann Roselius. Jimmy Don taught and coached in Stinnett for 11 years finishing as the Rattlers' head coach in 1970. Buck's Sporting Goods hired him as their traveling school salesman and later he became partner in the company.
Carol and Jimmy Don were a powerful team. They shared a love of inspiring youth. Both WTSU graduates, they touched young lives as educators in both school and church. Carol Ann preceded him in death on March 5th, 2005.
His many accomplishments were testimony to his faith, work ethic and strong character. There was never a question where you stood with Jimmy Don.
Survivors include his son Jimmy Joe Mitchell and wife Kelly of Panhandle; his daughter Julie Young and husband Rex of Amarillo; five grandchildren Sarah Long and husband J.D. of Canadian, Paul Mitchell and wife Sydney of Canyon, Hannah Lewis and husband Grant of Bushland, Jantzen Young of Lubbock, Jarrett Young of Amarillo; two great grandchildren Ellie Jo and Madison Rae Mitchell.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Carol and Jimmy Don Mitchell Memorial Scholarship Fund 504 24th St. Canyon, Texas 79015.
