Johnny Ray Gunter, 74, passed away Tuesday, April 5, 2022.

Please join the family for a time of celebration, remembrance, and sharing of Coach Gunter stories on Saturday, April 23, 2022, in the event center at Celebration Family Church in Fritch from 5 p.m.-7 p.m. In lieu of flowers, please honor his memory by giving back to the youth in your area, donating to your school's athletic booster club, volunteering your time for youth sports, and supporting the local youth sports programs in your area.

Johnny was born November 24, 1947 in Borger, Texas to J.C. Gunter and Louise Glidewell Gunter. He married Alice Ann Caraway on March 24, 1972 in Dawn, Texas. Johnny earned his bachelor's degree from West Texas A&M University; in fact, he was just a few credits shy of his master's degree.

If you knew Johnny, you knew he had a heart for Christ; he spent many years teaching in youth groups and children's churches. He was a member of the Gather Church. Johnny enjoyed collecting cars, watching all sporting events, and attending all his grandkids' activities.

Coach Gunter began his coaching career in Amarillo at Sam Houston Junior High, where he coached football, basketball, and track. He then moved to Friona to be the Head Junior High Coach. Darrouzett was the next town that was fortunate enough to have Coach as their head basketball coach. His final move would be where he found his home with the Borger Independent School District. He not only coached he taught driver's education, but also middle school history and economics. He retired from Borger Schools in 2002. However, he was asked to come back and coach pole vault for another seven years. Coach took great pride in running the football clock, and he did so until the end of the 2021 season.

He is preceded in death by his parents, J.C. and Louise Gunter; sister-in-law Betty Gunter; mother and father-in-law, JB and Helen Caraway; and brother-in-law, Bob Caraway.

Survivors include his wife, Alice of Fritch; son, Shane Gunter and his wife Jennifer of Borger; grandchildren, Ayame, Viktor; brothers, Ronnie Gunter of Fritch, Jerry Gunter, and his wife Katie of Garland; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of extended family and friends.
