Laura was born January 20th, 1947 in Dyersburg, Tennessee to Fred and Maurine Lanier Childress. She met her husband to be, Mark Boyett Dill, while they attended Baylor University. Laura and Mark were married on August 5th, 1972 in Dyersburg. She moved to Borger, Texas in 1978 and lived there until 2001 when she retired from Borger Independent School District and moved to Amarillo. After retirement, she was a member of the AI chapter of PEO and served on the board of the local American Cancer Society. Volunteering at the Ronald McDonald House and Reach to Recovery was a great honor for her.
She loved nothing more than to be with her children and grandchildren. They all loved their "Shugar." She and Mark enjoyed nights out eating dinner, attending the Amarillo Symphony, and traveling as often as they could. Her dogs brought her much joy and will miss her greatly.
Laura maintained close contact with a group of high school friends, dubbed the "Yayas." They enjoyed traveling together and chilling. They fell in love with Maine last summer and spent weeks picking up sea glass, shells, and rocks on the beach. This is a hobby she pursued on any beach she visited. She was a voracious reader, absorbing as many history books, biographies, and fiction as she could. Laura had a green thumb and could name almost any species of plant, tree, or flower she saw. Laura enjoyed spending time outside, taking in all of God's creation. She enjoyed bridge club, book club, chocolate of all kinds, Diet Coke, and cupcakes. Laura had quite an obsession with the Oscar Mayer Wienermobile, and she was fortunate enough to ride in it last year. She wanted everyone to know that she ALWAYS returned the shopping cart.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her parents-in-law C.P. and Audrey Dill, her grandson Nathaniel Dill, and her sister-in-law Su Cornforth.
Laura is survived by her husband of 44 years, Mark; daughter Elizabeth Newry and her husband Rei of Amarillo; sons Luke and his wife Amber of McKinney, Texas, and Matthew and his wife Missy of Amarillo; seven granddaughters, Makinlee, Molly, Sophie, Audrey, Maebyn, Maebree and Lucy; her two sisters, Colleen Newcomb of Houston, Texas, and Carolyn Dickerson of Memphis, Tennessee.
Celebration of Life service will be Saturday at 1:00 p.m. at the 1st Presbyterian Church, 1100 S. Harrison in Amarillo. There will be a cupcake reception after the service at the church. Interment will be in Llano Cemetery under the direction of Minton Chatwell Funeral Directors of Borger.
The family would like to thank the staff at Texas Oncology for taking tremendous care of her since 2011, as well as BSA Hospice of the Southwest for their loving care.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Ronald McDonald House, 1501 Streit Dr., Amarillo, TX 79106 in memory of Laura.
