Leona Bednorz

Panhandle Leona Irene Bednorz, 77, died Saturday in Borger. A Rosary is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Tuesday and Mass is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at St. Theresa's Catholic Church with Father Mieczyslaw Przepiora officiating. Interment will follow in the Panhandle Cemetery. Arrangements are under the direction of MintonChatwell Funeral Directors of Panhandle. Casket bearers will be Chad Horner, Danny Bednorz, Randy Bednorz, Michael Bednorz, Nook Lanier, Levi Bednorz, Josh Brown, Theador Bednorz and Johnnie Kirkwood. Leona was born March 18, 1931 to Levi and Emma Mitchell in Coolidge, Arizona. She was a lifelong resident of Panhandle and she married John Bednorz December 16, 1950. Leona was shop foreman for Plains Aluminum for 33 years and then worked in the cafeteria for the Panhandle ISD for 7 years before retiring. She was a member of St. Theresa's Catholic Church. She loved quilting, knitting and crocheting as well as bingo, fishing, camping and especially being a part of her grandchildren's lives. She was preceeded in death by her parents, her husband John Bednorz, a son Roy Lee Bednorz, 3 grandsons Christopher Bednorz, Joshua Bednorz and Jordan Bednorz, a great grandson Andrew Horner, 2 brothers Roy Mitchell and Alton Mitchell and a sister Lanora Mitchell. Ms. Bednorz is survived by 2 sons - Michael Bednorz and wife LaDona of Dumas and Charles Bednorz of Panhandle; 2 daughters - LeaAnn Lanier and husband Robby and Rebecca Bednorz all of Panhandle; 2 brothers - Jimmy Mitchell of Borger and Bobby Mitchell of Amarillo; 5 sisters - Paulette Bower of San Antonio, TX, Betty Mitchell of White Deer, Vickie Carver of Spurger, TX, Shirley Woodland of Lumberton, TX and Jeanitta Whelchel of Claude, TX; 20 grandchildren and 20 great grandchildren. In lieu of flowers the family request that memorials be made to the Alzheimer's Association Panhandle Chapter 2200 West Seventh Street Amarillo, TX 79106 or the American Heart Association 6605 W. I-40 Suite A-6 Amarillo, TX 79106. The family will be staying at 101 Charles in Panhandle.
