BRISTER, Lois Ellen (Nixon) [[]Langford]
February 22, 1924 to August 12, 2018
Born to Raymond Bryan Nixon and Zuma (Martin) Nixon in Woodward, OK.
Lois moved to Borger, TX. in 1926, when the oil boom hit, and lived there most of her life until 2010 when she moved closer to her daughter in Gun Barrel City, TX. During her final years, she lived in Port Arthur, TX., near her granddaughter.
During WWII, she moved to Los Angeles, CA. where she welded the fuselage on the Douglas A-26 Invader, just like Rosie the Riveter. In the 50's she lived in Levelland and saw a UFO on the road coming home from Roswell, NM. with 2 girlfriends where they may, or may not, have had a few drinks (she is going to haunt me for putting this in here). After her passing, I was reading and found articles about the Lubbock Lights, this must have been what she saw.
She moved back to Borger in the 1960's, when her first grandbaby was born, because she was putting too many miles on her car traveling back and forth to see her. In Borger, she worked at Borger Steam Laundry, Cretney Drug, Bi-Rite Drug, Heard and Jones, Bulla's Jewelry and then for Youree's until she retired at the age of 75, all within 2 or 3 blocks from each other on Main St.
Grandma Brister was extremely afraid of storms and was forever worrying about clouds. At the age of 4 she experienced a tornado, it picked up the house and set it back down with her and her sisters on the bed screaming their heads off. She also lost a house in the tornado that hit Fritch in 1992. On August 29th, 2017 she had to be evacuated from her nursing home during Hurricane Harvey, a very traumatic experience for her. It would seem that her fears were warranted.
She was also afraid of the refinery. She lived in Phillips on Cook St for years and experienced many upsets up close and personal, most especially the one in 1980. She always listened to her police scanner, partly because of her fears, but also because she was nosy. Her grandmother raised her and would slap at her with her dishrag (that she said she always had in her hand) to tell her to stop being nosy but Grandma told me that it must not have worked! She loved her daddy and said she wanted to see him first when she got to heaven
Lois was funny and sweet. Her nurses all loved her and I would like to thank them for the way she was taken care of. Lord bless all the good nurses.
Lois was preceded by her parents; her brother, Wilbert "Raymond" Nixon; sisters, Mary "Virginia" Wells and Juanita Zuma Shoptaw. 1st husband Vernon Lee Langford Sr.; 2nd husband J.W. Brister; son, Vernon Lee Langford Jr. and daughter Valerie Ann Martin.
She leaves her Son in Law, Dee Martin; Granddaughters Lori Davis, Terri McDonald, and Taneshia Stone. Grandsons: Mike Martin, Scott Martin and Vernon Langford III. 13 Great Grandchildren and 9 Great, Great Grandchildren.
