Lula Thomas Mema Jones, 89 of Panhandle died Friday, November 4, 2011 in Claude, Texas.
Funeral Services will be 3:00 p.m. Tuesday, November 8, 2011 at the First Baptist Church in Panhandle, with Reverend Josh Light, Pastor, officiating. Interment will follow at the Panhandle Cemetery under the direction of Minton Chatwell Funeral Directors of Panhandle.
The family will receive guests, Monday evening from 5:30 p.m.to 6:30 p.m. at Minton Chatwell Funeral Directors 501 N. Main St. Panhandle, Texas 79068.
Mrs Jones was born June 18, 1922 in Ellis County, Texas to E.B. and Maude Thomas. She was a graduate of Plainview High School, and Wayland Baptist University. On December 23, 1942 she married E.L. Bud Jones in Plainview, Texas. They lived in the Conway community, and the city of Panhandle. In 1992 they celebrated their golden wedding anniversary. After 58 years of marriage her husband died, November 25, 2000. Lula was a longtime active member of the First Baptist Church in Panhandle, and helped to establish the Love In Action ministry there. She also served as church secretary for a number of years, and worked at the Carson County Library. Lula was also a member of the Order Of The Eastern Star, the 55 club, and enjoyed playing SkipBo with her card buddies. She entered the Palo Duro Nursing Home in Claude, February, 2011.
She is survived by two daughters Frances Jones Hobbs and husband Roy of Matador, Texas, Janet Jones Moore and husband Robert of Panhandle. She was affectionately known as Mema to five granddaughters Holly Hobbs Watson of Lubbock, Robin Moore Woodrell of Amarillo, Texas, Heather Hobbs Haile of Stephenville, Texas, Jenny Moore of Borger, Texas, and Becky Moore McClain of Panhandle, Texas nine great grandchildren Meagan and Corbin Lee, Zachery Carrillo, Toby Moore, Hailey Meier, Holden, Hudson, and Halston Haile, and James McClain.
She was preceded in death by five brothers, and four sisters. Lula was the last of ten siblings.
The family would like to thank the staff and nurses of the Palo Duro Nursing Home, and Hospice Of The Southwest for their love and tender care of their Mema.
