Mary Smith

Mary Esther Smith, 82 of Panhandle went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on July 31, 2020 in Panhandle. Funeral services will be 10:00 am Tuesday August 4, 2020 at the Church of Christ in Panhandle. Burial will be at 2:00 pm in Citizens Cemetery at Clarendon, TX under the direction of Minton Chatwell Funeral Directors of Panhandle. There will be a family and friends visitation Monday at the funeral home from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm.

Mary was born May 18, 1938 in Pampa, TX to Walter Lemond and Elma Corrine (Smith) Hagler. She married Gerald Smith March 29, 1961 after he proposed to her on their first date. She helped her husband with the kids in band so she became a mother to them. She taught in special education.

Preceding her in death is her parents, husband and sister Betty Biggs.

Surviving is her daughter Debbie Gilchrest and husband Tony of Memphis, TX. Tamra Hodges of Memphis, TX she thought of as her daughter. Brothers Jimmy Naylor and wife Kathy of Waco, TX; Ben Naylor of Ft. Worth, TX. Sister Virginia Cleveland and husband Dub of Mesquite, TX. Grand Daughter Trista Gomez and Husband Daniel. Great Grandchildren Santiago and Amelia. Many nieces, nephews and loved ones and friends. The people of Panhandle who she considered her family.

In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Church of Christ Student Scholarship Fund, P. O. Box 669 Panhandle, TX 79068 or the Panhandle High School Band Scholarship Fund.
