Melvin Fowlkes

Melvin Glen Fowlkes, 79, joined Jesus, his parents, a brother and many loved ones in his heavenly home Thursday, November 4, 2010 in Amarillo.

Born in Donley County to John and Laura Fowlkes on December 31, 1930, he grew up in the Panhandle, coming to Borger at age 16. At age 10, he placed his life in Jesus keeping. He graduated from Borger High School and after serving a stint in the army, he began a career with the Texas Department of Transportation that spanned over 42 years. On June 21, 1957 he made a lifetime covenant of marriage to Lydia Sellers. God blessed them with two children, John of Little Rock, AR and Melissa of Spearman. The family expanded to include Melissas husband, Kenny Eudy, and their four children Allison, Austin and wife Jessica, Andrew, and Abbey. Greatgranddaughter Landry was a special light in his life. Also waiting to join Melvin in heaven are his brother Jack and wife Doris of Windsor, California sister Laura Ingram and husband Cecil of Kingfisher, Oklahoma and sister Margaret Rider and husband Larry of Fritch.

Graveside rites will be 11 a.m., Saturday, November 6, at Citizens Cemetery in Clarendon. Celebration of life services will be 2 p.m., Sunday, November 7, at Calvary Baptist Church in Borger with the Rev. Jeff Hutchison, pastor, officiating. Arrangements are by MintonChatwell Funeral Directors of Borger.

Mr. Fowlkes was an active deacon of Calvary Baptist Church of Borger where he had been a member since 1948. He was also a volunteer at Golden Plains Community Hospital and a member of Friends of the Library.

Although words are inadequate to describe a life, some words that describe Melvin are: dedicated Christian loving husband, father, grandfather, and greatgrandfather beloved brother and faithful friend.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be to Hutchinson County Friends of the Library, 625 Weatherly St., Borger, TX 79007.
