Millie O. Newton, 91, died Wednesday, January 31st, 2007 in Claude, Texas.BRBRServices will be at 3:30 p.m. Saturday at the First Baptist Church in Panhandle with Mr. Larry Richardson of Amarillo officiating. Interment will be in the Panhandle Cemetery under the direction of MintonChatwell Funeral Directors of Panhandle.BRBRMrs. Newton was born on April 3, 1915 in Elk City, Oklahoma. She was the daughter of Gilbert and Margaret Shankle, one of seven sisters and one brother. She married Carl E. Newton on December 21, 1933.

Millie was a charter member of the Assembly of God Church in Panhandle. She was a painter and was a song leader for the church for over 40 years. Millie and her daughters used to sing together. She had a very beautiful high soprano voice. Millie taught herself to play piano and sing simultaneously. She was also self-taught on the guitar, banjo and a little saxophone.

Millie drove the book mobile for the Carson County free library. She was a nurse's aid at the Groom Hospital working night shift for several years. In the 50's she worked at Deet's Burger Place.

Millie crocheted everything available within her grasp. Her left-handed sister Evelyn, taught Millie to crochet. Millie was right-handed.

While attending an Oral Roberts Crusade there was a storm. It blew over the tent and a beam fell on Millie's head. As a result of the accident, she suffered a tremor for the rest of her life. A few years ago she started writing with her left hand. She was doing genealogy work for the family until she was no longer able. Millie was a very respectable lady.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Carl Newton in 1986,and her son, Howard Newton in 2006.BRBRHer survivors include two daughters - Odessie L. Voight and husband Archie of Texas City, Tx. and Donna Richardson and her husband Bob of Portola, California, two sisters - Ollie Thorp, age 98, of Temple, Texas and Evelyn Wallis, age 85, of Santa Fe, Texas. She had nine grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren.BRBRCasket bearers will be Joe Garcia, Stanley Voight, Edward Newton, Carla Barclay, Megan Voight and Meriah Voight.
