O. L. Winkle, 90, died on January 22, 2019 in Amarillo. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Saturday at the First Southern Baptist Church in Fritch with Rev. Jerry Don Cheshire, Pastor of the 1st United Methodist Church of Fritch officiating. Masonic Graveside Rites will follow at Westlawn Memorial Park under the direction of Minton Chatwell Funeral Directors of Fritch. The family will receive friends at the funeral home in Fritch from 5:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Friday.
O. L. was born December 24, 1928 in Whitewright, Fannin County, TX to Oliver Levi Winkle, Sr. and Ola Newell Winkle who were sharecroppers. He has lived in the Borger and Fritch area for the past 70 years and was a member of the First Southern Baptist Church in Fritch. He was a Warehouse man for Phillips 66 for 39 years and retired and went to work for Zachary for the next 13 years. O. L. loved his work but he said more than once that he would never chop cotton again. He loved his family and 5th Wheel camping every year on Labor Day in Red River, NM. He also loved boating at Lake Meredith even though he could not swim at all, but he would bob like a cork with his two ski belts and life jacket he always wore. O. L. was a member of the Unity Masonic Lodge.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife Pat, his son Darrell, two brothers and five sisters.
O. L. is survived by his wife Hazel, his two sons Danny Winkle and his wife Sue of Amarillo and David and his wife Donna of Borger, his sister Lee Winkle Landers of Duncanville, TX, his eight grandchildren Kevin, Jennifer, Brent, Dylan, Drichia, Darrell, Billie and Sylvia and his ten great grandchildren.
Mr. Winkle will lie in state at the funeral home in Fritch Noon until 8:00 p.m. Thursday, 9:00 a.m. until 8:00 p.m. Friday and Saturday until one hour before service time.
