Richard Orr

October 20, 1938 — September 30, 2024

Richard Orr, born October 20, 1938, in Amarillo, Texas, passed away on September 30 at the age of 85. He lived most of his life in Panhandle, Texas, where he built a meaningful and fulfilling life. After graduating from Texas A&M University in 1963, Richard served four years in the United States Air Force. Following his service, he returned to Panhandle to farm and ranch. In 1978, he began working for the Carson County ASCS as a field man and later became a District Compliance Assistant with the Farm Service Agency (FSA), working in offices across the Texas Panhandle. After retiring from the USDA, Richard continued his work in agriculture as a crop insurance adjuster, always passionate about the land and supporting local farmers.

Richard was also an active and dedicated member of his community. He served as a Sunday School teacher and Deacon at the First Baptist Church of Panhandle, where his faith and commitment to others shone brightly. Additionally, he was committed to education, serving on the Panhandle school board for twelve years, helping to guide and improve the local school system.

In addition to his professional and community commitments, Richard was a talented woodworker who enjoyed working on various projects. Most of all, he treasured time spent with his family, particularly attending his grandchildren’s events and taking great pride in their accomplishments.

Richard was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Linda Orr, to whom he was married for 57 years.

He is survived by their two sons, Steven (married to Regina) and Chris (married to Sunny). He was a proud grandfather to Steven and Regina’s children: Taylor Anne Ross (married to Taylor Ross), Jared Orr, and Allison Orr; and to Chris and Sunny’s children: Rosser and Molly. Richard also cherished his great-grandson, Levi Campbell, son of Taylor Anne and Taylor. His grandchildren and great-grandchild were a central source of joy, and he delighted in celebrating their achievements and spending time with them. Richard is also survived by his sister, Judy Orr.

Funeral services will be held at 10 am Thursday, October 3, 2024, at First Baptist Church of Panhandle. Burial will follow in Panhandle Cemetery under the direction of Minton Chatwell Funeral Director of Panhandle.
