Velma Mae Hood, 82, of Borger died Thursday August 27, 2009. Celebration of her life will be at 1:00 p.m. Monday at First United Methodist Church in Borger under the direction of MintonChatwell Funeral Directors of Borger.
Velma was born August 13, 1927 in Bonham to J.O. and Beulah Bragg. Velma met her future husband Jack Hood while attending high school in Denton, Texas and they were married in Bonham, Texas on July 20, 1948.
Velma graduated from North Texas University and taught school while Jack attended and graduated from Southern Methodist Law School. Upon Jacks graduation from law school they moved to Borger where they made their home. Velma became a full time mother and teacher to her children.
After Jacks tragic death in 1969 Velma returned to teaching at Davy Crockett Elementary School in Borger, Texas, where she taught for more than 20 years.
Velma enjoyed golf, bridge and all things competitive. She had a true gift in the arts, where she captured the beauty of life in her gorgeous paintings. She always enjoyed traveling, being with family, friends and especially grandchildren. She was a faithful member of First United Methodist Church of Borger for more than fifty years.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Jack Hood, her parents J.O. and Beulah Bragg, and a sister Doras Bragg Noble.
Survivors include four children. John Hood and wife Shelly of Dallas, Kim Radcliffe and husband Sam of the Woodlands, Tom Hood and wife Jeanine of Amarillo, Matt Hood and wife Diedre of Borger, TX; ten grandchildren, Heather Hood and Heidi Hood of Dallas; Conan Vogel of Houston, Taylor Vogel and Jimmy Vogel of New Braunfels; Michelle Hood, Kristen Hood and John Hood of Amarillo; Margo Hood and Natalie Hood of Borger. Two sister-in-laws, Connie Rattan of Cisco and Patsy Hood of Austin; many loving nieces and nephews.
Memorials may be made to Alzheimer's Association or to the First United Methodist Church, 200 N. McGee, Borger 79007.
The family will receive friends at 213 Pieffer in Borger, TX.
