Velma Loveda Moon, 93, passed away Wednesday, February 2, 2022 at her home with family near her side.
She was born August 25, 1928 to Melissa Jane Garver Vankirk and James Franklin Vankirk in Sayre, Oklahoma.
Funeral services will be held at 2 pm on Friday, February 11, 2022 at Biblical Apostolic Church with Pastor Jerry Moon officiating. Burial will follow in Westlawn Memorial Park under the direction of Minton Chatwell Funeral Directors of Fritch. Ms. Moon will lie in state beginning at 9 am on Wednesday, February 9, 2022 at the funeral home in Fritch.
She married Neal Alexander Moon, Sr. on May 18, 1945 in Sayre, Oklahoma. There they had one son Neal A Moon Jr, before moving to Jim City, Texas as her husband began working for Phillips Refinery in 1948 having had and raised children Rickie Ray, Vickie Kay, & Cynthia Gay during this time.
Besides the love for her family, making sure summers were filled with traveling and family gatherings, some of Velma’s passions were gardening and baking. She eventually opened up her own pie shop in Borger, Texas in the early 1970’s, where she served nearly all of Hutchinson County as well as many of her husbands coworkers at the refinery during that time of her husbands working there.
Her hobbies consisted of collecting and thrift shopping, as she would say to her family when they would ask “what in the world she was going to do with that item” her reply would be “there’s a place and use for everything she would find”.
Velma was a woman of many strengths and a huge heart of goodness and definitely had the cats nine lives beat for sure most will say, even today.
She has attended Faith Baptist Church in Fritch since 1980. Her favorite saying was always just give it to God and everything will work out.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Melissa June Garver Vankirk and James Franklin Vankirk; husband, Neal A Moon, Sr.; 3 sisters, Stella Cook, Vina Buchholz, June Sanders; as well and her 5 children, Neal A. Moon, Jr., Loveda G. Moon, Rickie R. Moon, Sr., Vickie K. Moon, and Cynthia G. Moon.
