Wilfred John “Jack” Hammer
Jack Hammer passed away March 24, 2021. He was born to E.L. “Gene” and Margaret E. Hammer on March 21, 1953. He is predeceased by his father, Gene Hammer and two brothers, Philip Hammer and Jerome Hammer. Survived by his wife of 28 years, Adeline (Dukes) Hammer of Panhandle, his Mother, Margaret E. Hammer of Amarillo, stepsons Jimmie Hays and wife, Shannon of Panhandle, Dennis Hays and partner Alex of Dallas, Stepdaughter Jill (Hays) Ludington and husband Josh of Amarillo, five sisters-Trudy Cogswell and husband Lee of Panhandle, Sharon Stephens and husband Bill of Amarillo, Margaret Ann Martinez and husband, Jesse, of White Deer, Veronica Willburn of Panhandle and Catherine Allen of Cheyenne, Ok; sister-in-law Kayla Hammer of Panhandle; seven brothers – Eugene A. Hammer and wife Kristie of Panhandle, Donald Hammer of Borger, Robert and wife Pamela Hammer of Panhandle, Tommy Hammer and wife Dianne of Amarillo, Melvin Hammer and wife, Kim of Panhandle, Kevin Hammer and wife Mistala of Amarillo, and Brent Hammer and wife Sarah of Crawford, OK.
Lovingly known as “Papa Jack” by grandchildren: Gaven Ludington, Evely Ludington, Blythe Ludington, Jack Hays, Ethan Hays, and Masyn Reining; great-granddaughter Oaklee Hays; 16 nephews 28 nieces, 20 great-nephews, 11 great-nieces .
Jack graduated from Panhandle High school in 1971 and was employed later by the Panhandle ISD, retiring after 37 years of service.
Jack learned the art of carpentry from his Dad and Grandfather. Never one to pay to have something repaired or built, Jack completely rebuilt his home and was able to repair most anything. Jack was passionate and very knowledgeable about firearms and loved hunting and shooting for sport. He also found great happiness in the thrill of his flying lessons and dreamed of obtaining his aviation license. When younger, he also enjoyed snow skiing and bull and wild bronc riding. Jack also LOVED his dogs and dancing with his wife to country music. Member of the Knights of Columbus Catholic men’s organization.
Family present viewing at Minton Chatwell in Panhandle from 3:00-5:00 pm on Friday, March 26, 2021 followed by rosary at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in Panhandle at 6:30 pm. Funeral mass is scheduled Saturday, March 27, 2021 at 9:30 am at St. Theresa’s Catholic Church in Panhandle, TX, followed by burial at Panhandle Cemetery.
