Mrs. Zelma Carol Byers was taken from this life Friday, April 28, 2017 while traveling to Borger from Amarillo.
Carol was born February 17, 1940 to John C. and Florence Damiano Dee in Picher Oklahoma, and was raised outside of Joplin Missouri. She was married to an amazing gospel preacher, Famous Byers, for 53 years until his passing on August 15, 2009. Together they spread the gospel and served the church in California, Missouri, and Texas. The bulk of their ministry in Texas was at the Ridgewood Church of Christ in Beaumont where he served for 32 years, followed by moving to Borger where they served for about three and a half years at the Church of Christ. After her husband passed on to his eternal reward, she faithfully continued to serve the church family in the outreach ministries of serving widows, visitation of members and high school student lunches. She loved to cook for others and the high school outreach lunch each Tuesday gave her that opportunity. She loved to study scripture, write poetry and craft her own greeting cards. But most of her passion, time and prayers were centered on her family. She adored her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren and especially enjoyed "her holiday" of Thanksgiving each year when all of the family and friends gathered. She will always be remembered for the faith she shared with others, her loving smile, unselfish and generous heart and continually serving spirit. Oh, Heaven rejoices as it gains a faithful Christian soldier.
She is also preceded in death by her parents, six brothers Gary, Cecil Max, William, Richard, Norman, Vince Dee, and one sister Patricia Trotter.
Carol is survived by her three daughters Carrie Walker and husband Marty of Borger, Tammy Rector and husband Jeff of Abilene, Tina DeRouen and husband Mark of Borger; her sister Naomi Morrison and husband Jim of Wichita, Kansas; eight grandchildren Caylon, Trent and Keelie Walker, Nick and Amanda Rector, Joshua, Cameron and Colton DeRouen; two great-grandchildren Masyn Walker, and Cooper Chrane.
Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 6, 2017 at the Church of Christ at Borger with her son-in-law Mark DeRouen officiating. Burial will follow at the Highland Park Cemetery. Services are under the direction of Minton Chatwell Funeral Directors of Borger. Pallbearers will be her grandsons.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the Borger High School Lunch Ministry C/O the Church of Christ at Borger PO Box 3364 Borger, Texas 79008.
