Zona Carol Hinson Vilas was born June 4, 1926 at her grandmother’s home in Lamesa, Texas, and the Lord took her home on January 3, 2021.
She grew up near the Kalgary Community. Zona graduated from Sul Ross State College where she was the editor of the Sul Ross Yearbook, a member of the Sachem organization, and played volleyball. She was a junior member of the USO and served in the Air Force soldier base at Marfa when she taught in Fort Hancock. She also taught in Brownfield, Slaton, Splendora, Kress, Amarillo and Dimmitt. In Plainview she was a member of the Junior League and later, a member of the Sweet Adelines in Ulysses, Kansas. Zona was a member of the Welcome Wagon Committee in Conroe. She was married to Billy Wayne Rush from 1950 to 1969. She was married to Robert Michael Vilas in 1974 until his death in 1990.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Charles Wright Hinson and Lena Valeria Self; three sisters; three brothers.
Survivors include her son, Charles Max Rush and wife, Joy of Fritch, Texas; daughter, LuAnn Belcheff and husband, Gregg of Stillwater, Oklahoma; five grandchildren; and five great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held 10 am on Saturday, January 9, 2021 at Washington Avenue Christian Church with Pastor Jim Shelburne officiating. Graveside services will be held at 3 pm in Spur Memorial Cemetery in Spur, Texas. The family will receive friends from 5-7 pm on Friday, January 8, 2021 at the Minton Chatwell Funeral Directors of Fritch. In lieu of flowers her memory may be honored with a gift to a charity of choice or Karman Legacy Hospice.
